GEO means generative engine optimization. The awkward name is for a simple job: make a page that an answer engine can find, understand, and decide to cite. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews do not work exactly the same way. None of them owes you a mention.

This guide does not include a percentage of citations, because this desk has not measured one. Anyone who leads with a precise share of "AI traffic" should show the method. If they do not, ignore the number.

How this differs from SEO

SEO is still about being a result someone can click. You care about crawling, intent, and whether the page deserves to rank. GEO adds a second outcome. The system may answer in its own words and only sometimes show a source. You can do everything right and still not be named. You can also be named for a sentence you would not have chosen.

Treat the two as related habits, not as rival religions. A page that is vague, copied, or hidden in an image is bad at both.

What you can actually change

Write one page for one question. Put the answer near the top, in sentences a person can check. Say who is writing and why they know. If the page is a company, say that. If it is an opinion, say that too.

Add something that is yours. A process, a definition you will stand behind, a comparison you made by using the tools. A rewrite of the current top ten pages gives an answer engine nothing new to cite.

Link the sources you used. Answer engines are more willing to repeat a claim that your page already attributes. Do not invent a study to sound cited.

Keep the useful text in HTML. A paragraph inside an image, or a wall of script that never paints text, is easy for a person on a fast laptop and awkward for a crawler.

Looking, which is the whole practice

Open the answer engines and ask the question your page claims to answer. Read who got cited. Open those pages. You are looking for what they did that you did not: a clearer definition, a primary document, a named author, a table, a date.

Perplexity is the easiest place to practice, because the sources sit next to the answer. It is not an SEO suite. Ahrefs and Semrush sell research, and some of their plans talk about AI answers. Check the plan. Then look at the answer engines yourself anyway.

What to skip

Do not stuff the phrase "as an AI language model" or a list of chatbot names into the footer. Do not publish fifty near-copies of the same definition. Do not buy a badge that promises inclusion.

If you want a paid placement, the honest version on this site is a labeled ad. It does not buy a citation in ChatGPT. The directory explains that split on the advertise page.

问题

Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Classic search still sends people to a list of links. Answer engines may mention you inside the reply. You want both a page that can rank and a page that can be quoted.
Can you pay to be cited by ChatGPT?
Not in any way this desk can recommend. A citation follows from a page an answer engine can fetch and a reason to trust it. A featured listing on this site is an ad. It is not a citation.
Should you block AI crawlers?
That is a choice, not a trick. If a crawler cannot read the page, that product cannot cite it. Read the current documentation for each crawler before you edit robots.txt. The names and the rules change.
