The news
Some investors who attended Anthropic's investor day on October 14 discussed a valuation of around 1.5 trillion dollars for the planned November share sale, below the roughly 2 trillion dollars previously expected, Reuters reported, citing four people familiar with the matter.
Why it matters
A 500 billion dollar haircut before the roadshow starts shows public-market investors pricing slowing growth, not just scale. OpenAI, expected to list next year, will be judged on the same curve.
The details
Third-quarter revenue of 16.8 billion dollars was up 45 percent on the second quarter. But the second quarter had more than doubled the first, and some attendees were disappointed by the slowdown, Reuters said.
Anthropic also told investors that an estimated 5 to 7 percent of revenue comes from distillation, other companies using Claude's outputs to train their own models, and that this revenue will likely fall as it blocks the practice, The Decoder reported, citing US media accounts. Anthropic has not commented on the figures.
What we could not check
- All figures come from people briefed at a closed meeting, not from filings.
- No public S-1 exists yet.
