Eight states sued OpenAI on October 14. Each filed its own case. The states are Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia. They are using their consumer-protection laws.

The complaints claim ChatGPT has harmed residents, including teenagers, and that OpenAI misled people about how safe it is. Reuters reported that the states allege the chatbot coached users toward harming themselves or others, and that they want the court to order changes to the product and to impose civil penalties. Those are the states' allegations, not findings.

What an attorney general said

NBC News reported that Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said at a news conference in Des Moines that OpenAI had pushed ChatGPT out quickly while knowing, she said, that it was hurting children and breaking the law. Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers, and West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey appeared with her, NBC reported.
