The news
A paper published in Nature Medicine on October 6 introduces MedGemma, a collection of medical vision-language foundation models based on Google's Gemma 3, and MedSigLIP, a medically tuned image encoder. On out-of-distribution tasks the authors report improvements over the base models of 2.6 to 10 percent in medical image question answering, 15.5 to 18.1 percent in chest X-ray finding classification and 10.8 percent in agentic evaluations.
Why it matters
Open, fine-tunable medical models matter because hospitals often cannot send patient data to closed cloud models. Peer review gives the claims more weight than a launch blog.
The details
The authors say fine-tuning MedGemma can be more effective than fine-tuning the base Gemma 3 model for medical tasks, especially when training data is limited. MedSigLIP performs comparably to or better than many specialised medical image encoders, according to the paper.
The models keep the general capabilities of the Gemma base models, the authors write. The paper is open access.
What we could not check
- Benchmark results are not the same as clinical validation in hospitals.
- We did not test the models.
