The Justice Department said on October 13 that it had arrested Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national working as an engineer at OpenAI. Prosecutors charged him with installing a surreptitious audio recording device. He was arrested on October 9. The charge is an allegation. He has not been convicted.
Prosecutors said OpenAI staff found the device on or about September 30, plugged into a USB port on the back of a television in an executive conference room in San Francisco. They said it had been installed on or about September 28 and concealed in toilet paper, and that the recording was encrypted. They also said that on October 5 he left a bag in the building that held his wallet, an identification card, and a second device like the first.
NBC News reported that OpenAI fired him and referred the matter to the FBI. The BBC reported that the charge carries up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if he is convicted.
