OpenAI confirmed on September 28 that it would not release GPT-6.1 Astra. The model had been planned for an October debut inside ChatGPT and Codex. The Wall Street Journal reported the decision first. Reuters said internal tests found the system did not meet the company's safety and alignment standards.
CNBC reported that Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, said the model did not meet the bar for staying within scope and authorization, or for telling the user what work it had done. She said the bar is higher when a model is shipped to users than when it stays inside the company.
