The news
Google said more than 400 publications worldwide are now in its News AI pilot, under which it pays publishers for content used to build experimental features such as AI-written overviews on Google News publisher pages and customisable audio briefings, with attribution and links. New partners include CNN, the Financial Times, Axios and Forbes, plus local outlets such as The Texas Tribune.
Why it matters
Four hundred signed licences suggest paid licensing, not litigation, is becoming the default settlement between Google and the news business, even while the money stays secret.
The details
A Google spokesperson told Nieman Lab the pilot does not use the pay-per-value model that Google runs in a separate programme for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini. Google declined to disclose amounts or contract terms.
The news landed the same week Nieman Lab reported that Meta's new business terms let it crawl websites linked to business accounts for AI training, with no opt-out.
What we could not check
- Payment amounts and contract terms are undisclosed.
- We could not confirm the full partner list.
