What an agent is, when not to use one, and a cautious way to start. No demo presented as a coworker.

An agent is a model in a loop. You give it a goal and some tools. It tries a step, looks at the result, and tries another step until it stops or you stop it. A chatbot that only talks is not an agent. The moment it can change a file, browse, or call an API, it is.
That definition is enough to stay out of trouble. The rest is about how much power you hand over.
A loop you can picture
The goal is specific: "Draft a reply from this note" or "Add a test for this function." The action is one tool call. The observation is what came back. The stop rule is yours: a draft to read, a diff to review, or a hard limit on steps.
If you cannot name the stop rule, you do not have a task. You have a vibe. Vibes are fine in a scratch folder. They are a bad idea in production.
Where beginners actually meet one
Claude and ChatGPT both let a general assistant use tools. Start there if the work is research or a document. Read the output. Do not paste secrets into the chat to "save time."
Cursor is the usual editor when the task is code. Ask for a small change. Read the diff. Run the tests. The agent is not junior staff. It does not get bored, and it does not know which line is load-bearing.
Zapier is the short path between two apps. n8n is the path when you want to host it and add your own code. An automation with an AI step is an agent even if the marketing says "workflow." If it can email a customer, treat it like a person with a send button.
LangGraph is for engineers building this loop inside their own product. Skip it until that is the job.
When not to
Do not let an agent do anything you would not let a new hire do on the first morning. Refunds, production deploys, mail to the whole company, and anything with a password are not first projects.
Do not start with a goal like "run my marketing." Break it until the result fits on one screen and a person can say yes or no.
A cautious first week
Give the agent read-only tools. Then let it draft, with a person sending. Then, if you must, let it write inside a branch or a test account. Keep the credentials for production out of the prompt.
Write down what it is allowed to touch. When it does something odd, stop the loop. Do not argue with it for twenty steps. The log is the product. If you cannot see the steps, you cannot trust the result.
The directory's agents page is the short version of which product fits which of these jobs.
أسئلة
- Is an agent just a chatbot with extra steps?
- A chatbot answers. An agent is allowed to act: search, edit a file, send a request, or call another tool, then look at what happened and continue. The extra step is the risk.
- Which tool should a beginner open first?
- For general tasks, Claude or ChatGPT, with you reading every result. For code, an editor such as Cursor, and only on a branch you can throw away. For business apps, a small Zapier or n8n flow that cannot spend money.
- Why do agents feel unreliable?
- They can take a wrong action with confidence, then build the next step on it. A short task with a visible result is reliable more often than a long one you do not watch.
